Dress
Code
It should be understood that no dress code can possibly
be explicit in every detail, nor can it cover all future contingencies. Therefore,
the interpretation of the code is left to the immediate discretion of the
administration. If a student is out of dress code, parents will need to bring
a change of clothing or clothing will be provided. A detention for being out
of dress code will also be issued.
Slacks:
Boys are to wear dress slacks or cargo pants in navy or
khaki. A belt must be worn. Girls are to wear dress slacks or cargo pants
in navy or khaki, with the option of wearing a standard navy blue or khaki
skirt. Skirts should be right above the knee. Denim of any color, trousers
styled as jeans (except on designated dress-down days), work pants, sweat
pants, pants with elastic cuffs, stretch pants, excessively tight pants, or
pants of any color other than navy blue or khaki are not permitted. Frayed
shorts or pants are not allowed.
Shirts. Shirts and blouses may be of any solid color, long
or short sleeved, but must have a collar. Polo-type shirts with a standard
collar and top buttons may be worn. Blouses and dress shirts must be buttoned
and tucked in. Polo shirts may be worn in or out, but may not fall below mid
thigh. Blouses are to be full cut and worn modestly. No tank tops or t-shirts
will be allowed under blouses. Bare midriffs are not appropriate. T-shirts,
sleeveless shirts, or sweat shirts (other than Notre Dame sweat shirts) are
not permitted.
Shoes. Clean shoes in a good state of repair and socks (hose)
must be worn at all times.
Flip-flops are not allowed. *
Hair:
Hair must be combed, clean, and well groomed at all times.
Boys' hair may not go beyond the top of the collar, or below the eyebrows
for girls or boys. No eccentric hairstyles, e.g. braids on boys, girls with
shaven heads, are permitted. Boys are to be clean-shaven at all times. Mustaches
and beards are not permitted. *
Jewelry:
Students may have no more than two earrings per ear. Body
piercing is not permitted.
Tattoos:
Visible tattoos are not acceptable.
Sweaters:
All sweaters must be a v-neck, pullover, or cardigan-type
and must be worn with a shirt with a visible collar or a turtleneck underneath.
Sweaters with collars worn without shirts are not permitted. No sweaters with
writing are permitted, except "Notre Dame" insignia, personal monogram,
or common trademarks such as Izod, Fox, or Guess. No sweatshirts other than
Notre Dame sweatshirts are permitted. Sweatshirts are treated as sweaters
in all respects, as long as they are Notre Dame sweatshirts. Notre Dame refers
to either the university or the high school for purposes of this regulation.
Shorts:
Designated shorts may be worn before October 15 and after
April 15.
Boys - Boys are to wear navy or khaki dress shorts or cargo
shorts. A belt must be worn. Gym shorts are not permitted.
Girls - Girls are to wear navy or khaki shorts or cargo
shorts; capri pants are also acceptable. Shorts should be of walking short
length (no more than three inches above the top of the knee) and worn modestly.
Gym shorts are not permitted.
Dress-down attire is more casual than regular attire. Jeans,
shorts (of appropriate length), casual shirts, T-shirts, and similar-clothing
may be worn at the students' discretion. However, all clothing must be clean
and in good repair. Material printed on shirts, sweat-shirts, or T shirts
must be in good taste (e.g. no alcohol references, no wording offensive to
an ethnic group.) Bare midriffs or sleeveless shirts are inappropriate. Socks
are still required. Flip-flops are not allowed. *
A uniform is required for participation in physical education
classes. The PE uniform consists of tennis shoes, socks, navy blue gym shorts,
and a gray T-shirt with Notre Dame printed on it. Authorized PE uniforms are
available at Newberry Sporting Goods. Only the authorized PE uniform may be
worn.
INAPPROPRIATE ATTIRE WILL BE DEALT WITH BY THE ADMINISTRATION.
