The H2O Project
During the next two weeks, students at Notre Dame Elementary, Junior & Senior High School wll be taking part in The H20 Project. Through this project, our children will be helping the drilling organization that Notre Dame will choose to provide safe drinking water to needy communities. Unsafe drinking water is the second leading cause of death in the world.
For two weeks our kids iwll be hearing about the impact a simple water well can have on a community where water shortages have brought poverty, disease and loss of life. Our students have been presented with this challenge:
Make water your only beverage for two weeks.
Place money in the cup bank which would have otherwise been used to buy a beverage.
Return your cup bank on March 19th.
Parents and friends: Please encourage our kids, join in the project and add to their cup. Also, please pray for the H20 Project, for drilling organizations and for the many communities waiting for a well.

Bid Your Heart Out
Tickets are now available for the Fifth Annual Notre Dame Bid Your Heart Out Auction at the Southern Ohio Medical Center Friends Center on Feb. 6.
The evening of bidding begins with a silent auction. Kristie Johnson, assistant development director at Notre Dame Schools, explained that each person has a unique bid-number, and they can walk around the room and see items that are available in the silent bidding.
?When they show up at the door they?re given a bid-book, and that?s a list of items and donors and the value of the item,? she said.
In front of each item is a sheet of paper, and bidders who are interested in that item will write down their bid number and how much they wish to bid. Bidders also can see how much other people have bid and try to out-bid them, if they like ? but bidders? identities are kept secret. There is no minimum reserve price, and at the end of the evening the highest bid wins that item.
?It?s exciting because the value might be $100, but they might get it for $25,? Johnson said.
During the live auction, hosted by Allen?s Auctions, bidders simply raise their hand to bid on items as they?re presented.
Some items in this year?s grand auction include front-row tickets to see Taylor Swift in Cincinnati; tickets to University of Notre Dame football games; one-week in a Hawaiian condo; a trip to tour castles of Newport, R.I.; a Greenbriar getaway; a spa or golf trip to Hotsprings, Va., and more.
?We have an awesome group of volunteers that are very hip and up with everything and have traveled a lot, so they have great ideas on where people might want to visit,? Johnson said. ?Then, if somebody donated a time share, we might throw in a gas card, or dinner somewhere. We try to piece the items together so it turns into a really nice package.?
The auction traditionally has class baskets also, made by students of Notre Dame.
?Each grade is responsible for putting together a basket, and they might bring items in for it based on a theme, or they might send money in for someone to go get everything and package it up and make it real fancy,? Johnson said.
There?s also a raffle, where, for only $10, the bidder can enter to win items such as a big flat-screen television, an iPod Touch with projector, or a cash prize currently valued at about $1,000 ? and growing. And for only $1, bidders can participate in a chinese auction to enter to win gift certificates from local businesses.
?We are still accepting donations, up until Jan. 20,? Johnson said.
Any local businesses who would like to donate to the school auction can contact the Notre Dame Development Office in the high school.
All money raised by the auction goes into the annual fund and is split between Notre Dame High School and Elementary. It?s impossible to predict how much they might earn each year, but Johnson said one year the school raised more than $80,000.
?It?s really more of a friend-raiser. It?s such a community event and so many people get involved. It?s a really happy and exciting event, that what we make is a bonus and having a great time is really important also. It?s become a classy community event,? Johnson said.
Tickets are limited and are available now at Notre Dame High School and Elementary for $45 each. The auction begins at 5:30 p.m. at the SOMC Friends Center, Feb. 6. The cost of tickets includes all legal beverages, wine tasting, hors d?oeuvres, and a dinner of either prime rib, apricot chicken breast or grilled salmon, with dessert.
